The Blandford-znajek Mechanism and Emission from Isolated Accreting Black Holes

چکیده
In the presence of a magnetic field, rotational energy can be extracted from black holes via the Blandford-Znajek mechanism. We use self-similar advection dominated accretion (ADAF) models to estimate the efficiency of this mechanism for black holes accreting from geometrically thick disks, in the light of recent magnetohydrodynamic disk simulations, and show that the power from electromagnetic energy extraction exceeds the accretion luminosity for ADAFs at sufficiently low accretion rates. We consider the detectability of isolated stellar mass black holes accreting from the ISM, and show that for any rapidly rotating holes the efficiency of energy extraction, BZ ≡ LBZ/Ṁc, could reach 10−2. The estimated total luminosity would be consistent with the tentative identification of some EGRET sources as accreting isolated black holes, if that energy is radiated primarily as gamma rays. We discuss the importance of emission from the Blandford-Znajek mechanism for the spectra of other advection dominated accretion flows, especially those in low luminosity galactic nuclei. Activation of the Blandford-Znajek mechanism in collapsing stars
Collapse of massive stars may result in formation of accreting black holes in their interior. The accreting stellar matter may advect substantial magnetic flux onto the black hole and promote release of its rotational energy via magnetic stresses (the BlandfordZnajek mechanism). In this paper we explore whether this process can explain the stellar explosions and relativistic jets associated wit...
متن کامل“Meissner effect” and Blandford-Znajek mechanism in conductive black hole magnetospheres
The expulsion of axisymmetric magnetic field from the event horizons of rapidly rotating black holes has been seen as an astrophysically important effect that may significantly reduce or even nullify the efficiency of the Blandford-Znajek mechanism of powering the relativistic jets in Active Galactic Nuclei and Gamma Ray Bursts. However, this Meissner-like effect is seen in vacuum solutions of ...
متن کاملGeneral Relativistic MHD Jets
Magnetic fields connecting the immediate environs of rotating black holes to large distances appear to be the most promising mechanism for launching relativistic jets, an idea first developed by Blandford and Znajek in the mid-1970s. To enable an understanding of this process, we provide a brief introduction to dynamics and electromagnetism in the spacetime near black holes. We then present a b...
متن کاملThe spin-dependence of the Blandford-Znajek effect
The interaction of large scale magnetic fields with the event horizon of rotating black holes (the Blandford-Znajek [1977] mechanism) forms the basis for some models of the most relativistic jets. We explore a scenario in which the central inward “plunging” region of the accretion flow enhances the trapping of large scale poloidal field on the black hole. The study is carried out using a fully ...
متن کاملEnergy Extraction from Black Holes
In this lecture I give an introduction to the rotational energy extraction of black holes by the electromagnetic Blandford-Znajek process and the generation of relativistic jets. After some basic material on the electrodynamics of black hole magnetospheres, we derive the most important results of Blandford and Znajek by making use of Kerr-Schild coordinates, which are regular on the horizon. In...
